Opificio delle Pietre Dure e Laboratori di Restauro di Firenze
In 1588, at the request of Grand Duke of the Medici, Ferdinand I (1549-1607), the production studio for precious stone mosaics requiring advanced skills was set up in the current Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Rooted in this studio, the current National Laboratory of Restoration in Florence was established to restore historic cultural properties and works of art in 1975. Yet, before established as a national institution of restoration, “the studio in Florence set up in the 16th century” by fate had started active restoration activities throughout Italy. In 1932, Prof. Ugo Procacci, an art historian, set up a restoration laboratory focusing on paintings within the jurisdiction of Florence Cultural Assets Supervision, and this transformed the former restoration studio into a modern restoration laboratory logically and technically. The activities that determined the laboratory’s significance of existence were the restoration work of cultural assets destroyed in World War II and the project of “Florence Restoration” dealing with the damage caused by the flood of the Arno River on November 4, 1966. Thus, the National Laboratory of Restoration in Florence became one of the two national centers in Italy conducting “the restoration and preservation of cultural properties and training of restorers,” along with the Central Institute of Restoration in Rome established by Prof. Cesare Brandi, an art historian, in 1939.
