This division conducts survey, research, protection, and utilization regarding tangible cultural resources, things which exist in a certain form, like landscapes, archeological sites, various buildings, paintings, sculptures, and craftworks. As for specific research fields, it includes the disciplines of art history, craft history, archeology, architecture history, landscape history, cultural heritage studies, museology, etc, but it hopes to do research from diversified, comprehensive viewpoints, beyond the material, methodological limit inherent in each discipline. Naturally, its survey and research cover large area, from Asia and Europe to American continents. It also carries out a wide variety of activities, ranging from the excavation and preservation of cultural heritage sites to human resource development in education and utilization. Under these principles, it has conducted various international joint research activities: Jordon Archeology Studies and Education Cooperation Project, Vietnam Public Archeology Project, Indian Religious Architecture Survey and Research of Project, World Mixed Heritage Tikal Overall Project, pursuing abundant potential for international cultural resources studies.
