新刊学術書のお知らせ：Stone Age of Armeniaの出版
日本学術振興会の「二国間交流事業」によるプロジェクト「コーカサスにおける先史時代遺跡の立地と景観に関する考古学研究」（代表・藤井純夫教授）の成果として、次の書籍を出版しました（図１、２）。

本書は、石器時代のアルメニアに関する英語の論集で、旧石器時代から銅石器時代までの最新の研究成果を収録しています。アルメニアの先史時代研究を通史的に扱ったのは、本書が初めての試みで、現時点での研究の到達点を確認できるのと同時に、今後の研究の方向性や将来の展望についても触れています。目次は以下の通りです。

本書企画のきっかけは、筆者が頭脳循環プログラムで実施したセミナー（図３～５）の要旨集を計画したことでした。しかし、アルメニア側共同研究者と相談していくうちに、アルメニア先史時代の概説書となるような書籍の企画に変わっていきました。というのも、アルメニア考古学に関する概説書は、アルメニア語、ロシア語、英語にもほとんどないのです。もちろん私たち研究者によって、年に何本も論文が発表されていますが、最近の研究成果に基づきアルメニアの考古学事情を紹介した書籍はありませんでした。そのために、海外の研究者にとってはアルメニア考古学の実情が分かりにくく、また、地元のアルメニア人学生にとっては、自国の考古学を学べる良書がないという状況をまねいています。
そこで、アルメニア先史時代に関する本を企画するにあたり、次の２点を基本方針としました。１つは、最新の考古学成果を含めること。もう１つは、概説書としても利用できるように、重要な遺跡や文献一覧を網羅すること。これらを重視して、論考を集めることにしました。
さて、実際に本書の内容を立案していくと、先に述べた2013年に実施したセミナーの発表者だけでは、カバーできない分野があることが分かりました。そこで新たに、アルメニア人研究者だけでなく、アルメニアで調査を行っている欧米の研究者にも執筆を依頼することにしました。
出版にいたるまで、何よりも大変だったのは、論考を集めるのに時間がかかったこと、それから、本全体を通しての用語の統一、参考文献のチェック等に膨大な手間がかかったことです。とはいえ、いろいろな国籍の著者による論集が、計画から１年でなんとか出版できたのは、本書の企画に賛同してくれた著者一同の熱意のたまものでした。
アルメニアは国内の研究者が熱心に考古学調査を実施している国の一つだと思いますが、その一方で、毎年生み出される考古学成果をまとめた一般向けの書籍がほとんどありません。研究成果はあくまで研究者のものであり、それらを社会で活用するという点が大きく遅れているように思われます。今回は筆者の専門ということで先史時代を対象とした本を出版しましたが、この後、青銅器時代、鉄器時代、古典期、中世へと時代幅をひろげた同じような趣旨の本が必要だと考えています。あわせて、平易な文章で書かれたアルメニア語による一般書の企画も、アルメニア側に提案しています。文化遺産分野の国際協力の一つとして、こうした地道な活動を続けていきたいと思います。
